Ep 413: Brazil’s ‘sin tax’ uncertainty and the growth of fantasy sports with Bárbara Teles

Just days ahead of Brazil launching its regulated gaming market on 1 January 2025, the country’s government is pushing for a selective “sin tax” on sports betting, igaming and fantasy sports.

And this will be the topic for the latest episode of iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove. Fernando Noodt, Senior Journalist for SBC Noticias, is your host and he is joined by Ricardo Assis, Editor of SBC Noticias Brasil, and Bárbara Teles, Director of Government Relations for the Brazilian Fantasy Sports Association, to discuss the ramifications of the legislation for the fantasy sports industry.

The trio talk about why fantasy sports have been included in the tax bill and the industry’s reaction to the news, as well as consider if the decision was a technical or political move. Barbara also provides an update on the growth of fantasy sports in Brazil and considers the potential of the vertical in the country as it looks to compete alongside bigger markets such as India and the US.
