Ep 383: UK Budget and high-stakes US Election
Last week, Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered Labour’s first budget in 14 years. Amid the headlines, the biggest takeaway for gambling was the lack of news, as Reeves chose not to take the advice of financial think tanks and hike gambling taxes.
And this will be today’s topic on iGaming Daily, supported by Optimove. Martyn Elliott, SBC’s Project Director, is joined by Ted Menmuir, SBC’s Content Director, and the Editor of Payment Expert, Ted Orme-Claye to delve deeper into the details of the UK budget.
The trio discuss the gambling industry’s reaction to the budget, the potential streamlining of remote gambling taxes and why the UK industry needs to focus on the rest of the Gambling Act review adoption alongside the new Labour government.
Later on in the episode, the show’s attention shifts across the Atlantic where Americans are preparing to head to the ballot boxes and vote for either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris in tomorrow’s (5 November) US election. Although Americans are unable to bet on who their next leader will be, elsewhere in the world there has been plenty of action on betting exchanges and many have Trump as favourite, despite polls showing the race to be a dead heat or slightly in favour of Harris.
A sector that will be eagerly awaiting the results of the election is the Crypto industry and to end the episode the trio consider what a victory for either side could mean for the sector, as Trump has been a vocal supporter of crypto whereas Harris is expected to continue on a similar path to the one taken by the current Biden administration.
