Ep 371: Sweeps under the spotlight and the NCAA reveal athlete abuse

Jessica Welman, Editor of SBC Americas, is back with Charlie Horner, SBC’s Media Manager, for the latest episode of iGaming Daily supported by Optimove.

On the agenda for the duo is sweepstakes gaming, which was the hot topic throughout the recently concluded Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. In the wake of the event, members of the Indian Gaming Association and California Nations Indian Gaming Association appeared on a webinar sounding off on the vertical, equating both sweeps and DFS+ with vampires.

The duo discuss what the tribes are accusing sweeps of doing, why DFS 2.0 are being grouped in with sweeps and what course of action the tribes have. They also look at who else is talking about sweeps and what the general consensus is within the industry on the vertical.

After a short break, they then switch focus to look at a recent study released by the NCAA that found thousands of college athletes are being subjected to widespread public abuse on social media by “angry sports bettors”.

Jess and Charlie delve deeper into the results and ask whether this will finally change the minds of sportsbooks and regulators considering the NCAA’s repeated calls for a nationwide ban on individual prop bets for all college sports.
